Spring or Not?
This was the picture I
showed last week, this
is a bush that was in
full bloom and still
has some blooms.
Now this is yesterday
Snow on the mountain
in Wears Valley. Yes the calendar
says March, daylight savings time
says March, I want it to be March!!!
but God had other ideals. It is 22
here today and with a wind chill
it feels much colder. Are we ever
happy with the weather? I may
have whipped out the flip flops
to soon. If it’s 80 and humid
by Friday I am sure I will find
something to say about that also.
But maybe not much, my feet will
be to happy to whine a lot.
Spring Beauty
I love spring in the Smoky Mountains!!
I will let these beauties speak for
themselves, I just wanted to share.

HICKORY NUT DOLL: COMPANY’S COMING
COMPANY’S COMING: She’s sweepin’ out and polishin’ up to make
the home place nice for company. (Her broom is made from broom
straws or twigs, with a broom-straw-stalk, grapevine or twig handle.)
This Hickory Nut Doll reminds me of days long gone but not forgotten.
When I was a kid growing up in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee
company was a big deal. For you young folks this was before cell phones,
and most houses did not even have a home phone (mine didn’t) and if you
were lucky to have a home phone in some cases they were what we used
to call “party lines”, so most folks didn’t see or even talked to each other
all that often. Sunday’s after church was the big visiting day, every week
we were at one of grandparents or the other and there was ALWAYS family
and friends visiting. Both of my mamaw’s would cook and bake on
Saturday in preparation for everyone that would drop by on Sunday.
You were always welcome to sit down and have a bite to eat, something
was always on the wood cook stove at mamaw Ogle’s (by the by she used
her wood cook stove until she passed away, even after the family got her
an “electric stove”). We would be out in the yard playing and the adults
would be on the porch sitting in rockers or on the porch swing just talking
and enjoying each other’s company. Company was a blessing and always
enjoyed and I miss those days so much, these days a text, a tweet or a
message on Facebook is what we consider “visiting”. Don’t you miss being
face to face, sitting on the porch and just enjoying each other’s company.
As you check out this little, one of a kind, Hickory Nut Doll I hope she brings
back fond memories for you or better yet, inspires you to start some new
memories of Company Coming.

HICKORY NUT DOLLS:THE HEALER
The Healer: She has hiked many, many miles over the hills,
bringing comfort and healing to mountain people.
(Her pouch of mysterious herbs is an immature acorn or a
tree bud. Her staff is date palm frond or grapevine.)
Presenting Miss Elly’s Collection of Hickory Nut Dolls. Miss Elly lives in
North Carolina and has been making her dolls for years. She only has her
dolls in a few shops in North Carolina and here at CAM Cabin Crafts.
Each month a different doll in Miss Elly’s collection will be featured.
There will be a limited number that will be available for purchase
each month. I know you doll collectors will want to add this cute
and unique doll to your collection. Each doll will come with a story
sheet so that you can keep up with the ones you have and each doll
has her own story to tell.
These Folk Figures are meant to portray Mountain Women of
100 – 150 years ago. The portraits are of hard working and
resourceful women, keepers of their families, and contributing
members of their communities. Each figure is Titled, Signed and
Dated. They are approximately 5 inches tall, the heads are Hickory Nuts,
(the pointed “nose” is natural to the nut) She uses things from nature to
dress out her dolls. Each doll is a one of a kind and there will never be two
that are exactly alike, Miss Elly changes their dresses each time she makes
one so the doll you receive will not always match the doll in the picture.
But if you order one I will take a picture of the one I have available and
email to you before shipping. You will notice also that the
face and expression of each doll is different, each one is her own little
person.
The Healer is $32.99 plus shipping and handling and tax where
necessary.
